A type of AION

Presentation:

• RAPD , pale/swelling optic disc, monocular altitudinal scotoma

  

• Colour acuity is an early sign

RF:

• Age: younger than AION
• Vascular Risk Factors
• Anti-hypertensive (worse if take at night)
• Vasodilator (e.g. Sildenafil (Viagra®))
• Amiodarone
• Previous episode of focal neurological deficits (MS - Multiple Sclerosis )
• Small Cup-to-disc ratio (0.3-0.4) (< 0.3) on Fundoscope = higher risk of developing in another eye

Tm:

• Prevent future stroke
• Protect another eye from NAION
  • 5 yr risk: 15%
• Tm:
  • Will gradually resolve (but with vision loss)
  • Optimize vascular risk factor
  • F/O visual field assessment (Q3 mon. for 1 yr)
