Relevant Physiology

Pathogenesis

• Inflammation or fecolith
  • Fecolith (minority) → blockage of the appendix → increased intraluminal pressure → rupturing
  • Enlarged lymphoid tissue (majority) → unlikely to rupture

Presentation

Signs and Symptoms

• Unwell
• Unable to eat
• N/V - Nausea/vomitting
• Diarrhea (lose bowel movement)
• Early stage: peri-umbilical (T10), Visceral Abdominal Pain
• Late stage: RLQ Pain , Parietal Abdominal Pain
• Children Presentation (less likely experience RLQ pain)

Risk Factors

• FHX
• After a recent infection (children)

Investigation

DDx (! = Urgent Things to rule out)

• Flank Pain → Nephrolithiasis
• Gastroenteritis
