Depth of Burn

Zones of Injury (Jackson Model):

• Zone of Coagulation: Irreversible necrosis.
• Zone of Stasis: Viable but at risk; salvageable with proper resuscitation.
• Zone of Hyperaemia: Minimal damage; usually fully recovers.

Superficial Partial (2nd Deg)

Deep Partial (2nd Deg)

Full Thickness (3rd Deg)

Extent of Burns

• Measured as Total Body Surface Area (TBSA).
• Rule of Nines commonly used (e.g., each leg ≈ 18%).
• 1% TBSA approximates the patient’s palm.

1. Burn ABCs
   • Parkland Formula for initial fluid calculations.
2. Secondary Survey
   • Identify circumferential burns → risk of compartment syndrome → possible Eschartomy

  • Removal of necrotic tissue (excision).
  • Skin Graft
