Hepcidin regulates iron export by binding ferroportin, the only known iron exporter on enterocytes, macrophages, and hepatocytes. When hepcidin is high, ferroportin gets internalized and degraded, and iron stays locked inside cells. When hepcidin is low, iron flows into plasma. The whole system supports erythropoiesis, mitochondrial enzyme function, and oxidative metabolism.
