Risk factor for Barrett’s esophagus in people with GERD

• GERD > 5 yr
• Older Adult > 65 (RF) (> 50)
• Caucasian
• Central Obesity
• High BMI (18.5 - 25) → > 25 → Obesity
• Smoking (RF)
• FHx of Barrett’s esophagus or Esophageal adenocarcinoma

Screening

• However, screening in people with GERD is controversial

  • Canada → still don’t recommend
  • Depends on Pt preference
