Inspect

• Deformity, Swelling, blistering and brusing
• Assess for open wound → !Open Fracture vs Closed Fracture**
  • Any laceration near a fracture is an open fracture until proven otherwise

Palpation

• Compartments: compressible, soft, no pain with passive stretch → !Compartment Syndromes
• Distal Brief Peripheral Vascular assessment : → Vascular Injury of Fracture
• Distal Hand Peripheral nerve exam : → Peripheral Nerve Injury

NOTE: Range of motion is always painful and almost never helpful

Screen (full secondary survey)

• MSK Screening for other site, especially for !High-Impact Trauma
  • Limbs, spin, extra-MSK (head, abdomen, thorax)
  • Examine Joint above and below the injury site
