Hepatocellular carcinoma (Hepatoma)

Diagnosis

• Don’t need BIOPSY!
• US with contrast
• Liver MRI wc
• Tri-phasic CT* GS
  • ↑ Enhancement of the nodule in arterial phase
  • ↓ Wash-out of the nodule in porto-venous phase

RF

• Chronic inflammation: Cirrhosis
• HBV is the only thing that can lead to HCC without cirrhosis

Prognosis

• Worse prognosis is associated with
  • Bigger size
  • Presence of clinical Cirrhosis (liver failure)

Monitoring

• In people with Cirrhosis :
  • Monitored by Liver US
    • Q6-12 mon.
    • New nodules investigated by contrast imaging (US, CT, MRI)

Treatment

• Surgery
• Liver transplant if meet specific criteria (size, not M)
