Radioactive Iodine Therapy
- a larger dose of radioactive iodine (usually Iodine-131) is used.
- This form of iodine emits beta radiation, which destroys thyroid cells. It is commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism by ablating (destroying) overactive thyroid tissue and to eliminate any remaining thyroid cells after surgical removal of thyroid cancer. The goal is to reduce thyroid hormone production or eliminate cancerous cells while minimizing the effect on other tissues.
