  • Signs of Respiratory Distress

• Cyanosis

  • Central: buccal mucosa, under the tongue (serious)
  • Peripheral: lips, fingernails (+ capillary reflex, > 2s = abnormal) (benign)

• Clubbing - Shamroth’s window

• COPD - Tripod position (resp distress), Lip pursing

  

Chest inspection (gown off)

• Signs of Respiratory Distress
• Trauma
  • trauma, mass, scars, tender bruising, flail chest
• Position of the trachea
  • Deviation = pleural effusion/pneumothorax/atelectasis (volume loss) on one side
• Chest abnormality
  • Pectus carinatum Pectus excavatum,
  • Barrel Chest
• Back inspection
  • Kyphoscoliosis
