Preparation

• Explain exam, obtain consent (if anxious/uncomfortable about doing today, ok to defer to future visit), ensure chaperone
• Ask patient to empty bladder
• Drape from abdomen to knees, allow eye contact
• Position: Lithotomy (hips flexed, abducted, externally rotated)
• Wash hands, wear gloves, warm the speculum with water

Inspection

External Genitalia (don’t worry about details)

**Speculum Exam—**don’t need to know details for ME

Palpation of the Internal Genitalia (Bimanual Examination) - know:

• Cervical motion tenderness with adnexal tenderness suggests pelvic inflammatory disease
• Uterine enlargement suggests pregnancy or benign/malignant tumours
