Skin and Soft Tissue Infection - Key Points

• Commonly caused by GP bacteria that is part of the normal skin flora

  • GAS (MORE COMMON) → Purulent
    • Penicillin G/V (like penicillin, amoxicillin, or ampicillin)
  • Staphylococcus Aureus → Less purulent
    • Cloxacillin
    • 1st gene Cephalosporin (such as Cefazolin (1 gen IV) , CTX - Ceftriaxone (3 gen IV) )
    • Clindamycin (for penicillin-allergic patients & anti-toxin effect)
    • Vancomycin(for MRSA)

• For treating Gram-positive (GP) bacterial infections, common antibiotic regimens include: S. Aureus Regime

• C & S is often NOT required for Impetigo, Erysipelas, and Furuncle/Carbuncle (unless suspect !Sepsis)

• I & D - Incision and Drainage if see pus in enclosed space
