Effect:

• irreversible inhibition of proton pump→ effective acid suppression
  • Stomach Physiology

Conditions:

• GERD (generally not given for LT use, just 6-8 wks)
  • More severe symptoms (antacid and H2 antagonistic not working), OR GERD with complications
• Acute management of UGIB - Upper GI Bleed
  • !Non-variceal UGIB
  • !Variceal UGIB
• Cytoprotection
  • H. pylori
  • when pt taking high dose Oral Corticosteroid (OCS)

CI:

Side effects:

• In Older Adult:
  • Pneumonia
  • C. difficile risk
  • Hip Fracture
• Decreases Ca Supplement and B12 absorption
• Common
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • N/V - Nausea/vomitting
  • Dizziness
• May elevate the risk of Gastroenteritis
• Rare and idiosyncratic (not dose dependent)
  • Skin
    • !SJS/TEN
    • Erythema multiforme
  • Kidney
    • AIN - Acute Interstitial nephritis (Rare)
  • Pancreas
    • !Acute Pancreatitis
